HKIA sees rise in passenger numbers

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has seen a rise in the number of passengers passing through its doors in July, according to new data from the travel hub.

Passenger movements were up 17.5 per cent compared to July last year, showing more people are heading on flights to Hong Kong.

A new monthly high of 4.7 million travellers went through HKIA last month, with aircraft movements rising to 26,720.

Hong Kong boasts the second most popular event in the world, according to the Lonely Planet Awards, which were run in association with adventure specialist Explore.

Some 11.07 per cent of those surveyed for the awards said they would want to attend Chinese New Year in Hong Kong next year.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro came first in the awards with 26.01 per cent of the vote.

When in Hong Kong, most people tend to stay on the island itself or in Kowloon, opting for a city tour or dinner on the harbour during their holiday, according to Paul Jeffels, manager at Round the World Experts.

Hong Kong 'becoming important gateway'

Hong Kong is becoming an important gateway for people heading on flights to mainland China, it has been suggested.

Paul Jeffels, manager at Round the World Experts, said: "We are finding that it is becoming more difficult for the independent traveller to obtain a visa for mainland China without having a tour or hotels pre-booked. Lots of Intrepid tours start or end in Hong Kong so this acts as a good gateway."

Figures released this week by Hong Kong International Airport show overall visitor numbers registered a 29 per cent yearly increase last month.

Mr Jeffels said there has "always been a steady demand" for the country to be a stopover destination.

He added that this is for a "number of reasons", including the fact it is a free stop on the majority of around-the-world tickets, that it is just over half way to Australasia and it is "good value compared to the usual alternatives - Singapore, LA or NYC".
