Victoria's major events budget has almost doubled

The tax-payer funded budget for major events in Victoria has nearly doubled by the Labour government during the ten years that it has been in power.

Labour has increased the annual cap on subsidies for major events, from the $35 million (£19.6 million) which was placed on it by former prime minister Steve Bracks in 2000 to over $80 million in 2009 by the current prime minister John Brumby, The Age reported.

Included within the budget are events such as the formula one and motorcycle grand prix, the Australian Open tennis and the Australian Masters Golf.

Major events minister Tim Holding told the newspaper that the spending has also secured jobs and attracted tourists to the area.

The events industry has shown its support for the spending, saying that major events have been one of the reasons Victoria has been able to cope with the recession so well.

Mr Brumby's decision not to reveal how much public money is spent on individual events has also been backed by the Victoria Events Industry Council.
