Two beach events 'round off summer in New Zealand'

The end of summer in New Zealand will be celebrated with two beach events, it has been announced.

Taking place around the sand and surf of 90 Mile Beach, in New Zealand's far North Island, the two events feature challenging outdoor activities.

On March 20th, the Waka Ama Surf Challenge will take place for the 11th time, while on March 26th, the 17th Te Houtaewa Challenge will be held.

Te Houtaewa, a unique beach marathon run entirely on a beach track, often attracts international interest, with a German television crew making a 60-minute documentary about it during 2009.

Participants can choose to either take part in the 60km open ultra marathon, the 42km marathon or 21km half-marathon run.

Tourism New Zealand added: "Those after an easier challenge can choose to do the 21km half-marathon walk, 60km 5-person open relay or the 6km walk for life."

Last month, the Washington Post said 90 Mile Beach offers a great opportunity for horse-riding.
