Tourists flocking back to New Zealand

More people are taking a holiday to New Zealand, according to new tourism figures released for the month of September.

Visits to the country were up 9.3 per cent on the same month last year, equating to a total of 14,700 international arrivals.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton said the figures are a positive sign, signalling a recovery from the impact of the global recession and swine flu pandemic.

"Today's figures show our top five markets are all showing significant improvement on last month, which is great news for the industry heading into the crucial summer season," he added.

He added that nearby Australia is also showing strong growth, with arrivals up 25 per cent in September.

New Zealand recently came out on top of a Guardian and Observer poll to find the UK's favourite long-haul holiday destination, beating Chile, Vietnam, Japan and Cambodia.
