See rays and sharks on Australia's Heron Island

Travellers on Australia holidays may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of baby turtles, sharks and rays on a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, according to travel writer Simon Crerar.

In a recent Times article, he wrote about his trip to Heron Island's Bommie – a huge lump of boulder coral that Jacques Cousteau called one of the ten best dives in the world.

He said the scuba dive site known as Tenements "easily" makes it into his own top ten.

"Within minutes I see two white-tipped reef sharks, two swooping eagle rays, two blue lagoon rays, before enjoying encounters with a giant loggerhead turtle and a feeding green turtle. Unforgettable stuff," he wrote.

On shore, Mr Crerar was also lucky enough to spot baby turtles on his visit, which can be hatched from 200 nests a day at the peak of the season.

Heron Island is located in a World Heritage Listed area and has more than 30 dive sites, half of which are only 15 minutes from the beach.
