Record cruise bookings announced by P&O

A record number of travellers have already booked cruises for the 2011 holiday season, according to leading operator P&O.

It said bookings for its 2011 Cunard world voyages, which it launched this week, were already at 2,044 on Wednesday (July 1st), up 47 per cent on the 1,385 booked on the same day in 2008.

P&O Cruise's managing director Nigel Esdale said that despite the ongoing global recession, the figures show that "the appetite to take that 'once in a lifetime' voyage is far from in decline".

"The success of this launch day suggests that cruising is more immune to the current economic climate and that holidays are still a priority."

It was reported recently that a new dock facility in Northern Ireland is set to boost cruise tourism even further.

A total of 40 vessels, carrying more than 60,000 passengers, are expected to dock each year.
