Qatar Airways to launch new Melbourne route

People searching for flights to Australia may be interested to hear that Qatar Airways will run its first flights to Melbourne with the launch of a new route before Christmas.

The airline's chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker made the announcement at the Paris Air Show and said the thrice-weekly service will make use of its new fleet of Boeing B777-200 planes.

Qatar's new flights will connect travellers from Australia to the UK and Europe with a one-stop service and a planned one-hour connection time in Doha.

Mr Al Baker said: "Up until now our customers have had to travel to Asia to join our services.

"I know the travelling public is eager for us to begin serving Australia and I've had many people ask me about our direct routes to Melbourne and Sydney."

Emirates also recently announced it would be running a new route to Bangkok and the Canadian city of Toronto.
