New Zealand tourism numbers up
A record number of holidaymakers arrived in New Zealand during January, according to new figures. Tourism New Zealand said the figures represented a "welcome return to growth and stability after a tough 2009".
The figures show that tourism numbers for Australia were up by 15.7 per cent on January 2009, while a return to growth for Japan and South Korea was also witnessed.
"Despite ongoing fragility in the British economy, arrivals from the UK also held steady with only a 0.6 per cent decline," the tourism organisation said.
Kevin Bowler, Tourism New Zealand chief executive, said: "After many months of falling arrivals figures, both Japan and South Korea have begun to show arrivals increases on the back of improving economic conditions and consumer confidence."
He added that Tourism New Zealand will continue to keep focused on stimulating growth in long-haul markets and those that offer the best opportunities for growth.
Last month, Tourism New Zealand said international visitors to the country spent more during 2009, compared to 2008.
