New Zealand's Pasifika festival 'extended'
The Pasifika festival in New Zealand has been turned from a one-day celebration to an eight-day event, it has been announced. Considered the world's largest Pacific festival, the event brings together New Zealand's multi-cultural community in a vibrant, island-style celebration.
Events will take place in Auckland, which is the world's largest Polynesian city, and will involved locals and international performers.
On March 11th, the event will feature performances from each of the ten communities represented as 'villages' and a free concert of stories, dance and song.
Other planned activities include a recital by Mika and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, who will perform Po; Beautiful Darkness - a new tribal pop opera, while 1,000 performers from Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Tahiti, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Tangata Whenua will also take part in this year's event.
Earlier this month, Tourism New Zealand said a record number of holidaymakers arrived in New Zealand during January.
