India's Chandigarh 'becoming more popular'

Holidaymakers and travellers are increasingly choosing to visit the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, new figures have revealed.

The number of foreign tourists visiting the area grew from 32,074 in 2008 to 37,967 last year, the Department of Tourism of Chandigarh Administration said.

Sarina Singh, senior author for Lonely Planet India, said recently more tourists are choosing to stay in Chandigarh for at least two nights, thanks to the city's attractions, adding that the Nek Chand Fantasy Rock Garden is now one of India's most visited sites.

"There is a growing number of tourists…who are keen to jump off the tourist treadmill – Chandigarh, historically one of India's lesser-visited tourist destinations, perfectly fits the bill in this regard," she added.

She added that while accommodation can be expensive, the city has plenty of culinary options.

"When it comes to value for money on the culinary front Chandigarh shines, offering everything from cheap-as-chips roadside eateries to fancy multi-cuisine restaurants," she added.
