Hong Kong says happy birthday to Kwan Tai

Every year in August, residents and visitors join together in celebration for the birthday of Kwan Tai, the God of war.

The Birthday of Kwan Tai festival takes place at the Man Mo Temple on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, which this year falls on August 14th.

During the festival, locals bring offerings to Kwan Tai and give prayers up for his protection and blessing.

Kwan Tai lived during the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220-265) and is now the patron saint of the police in the region.

Man Mo, which translates to 'civil and martial', is dedicated jointly to Kwan Tai and the God of literature.

It contains an ever-burning lamp, which stands before the statue of Kwan Tai in the temple on Hong Kong Island's Hollywood Road.

Hong Kong celebrates another historical event – the Seven Sisters Festival – later in the summer.

As part of the worship, young women make offerings to the night sky and two special stars that represent the cowherder and the maid.
