Hikers urged to be careful on Beijing's mountains

While Beijing offers an excellent range of hiking opportunities, people are being urged to be careful while on the mountains in the area.

A report by China Daily noted that there were a number of accidents on the mountains around Beijing in 2009.

Zhang Yong, leader of the Lantian rescue team in Beijing, warned that good preparation is crucial when considering a hike.

"There are three things necessary for hiking in winter: a headlamp or flashlight with fully charged batteries, a down jacket and matches, a lighter or other equipment that can help make a fire in an emergency," he said.

He added that people should ensure that they are choosing routes which are suitable for their capabilities.

According to the newspaper, the most dangerous places to hike are Phoenix, Lingshan, Haituo and Yunmeng Mountains.

The Great Wall of China is one of the most popular hiking routes in Beijing.
