DIY tourguides for outback travellers

Travellers planning flights to Australia for an outback adventure can now create their own DIY tourguide to help them get the best out of their trip.

The Northern Territory has designed the audio sightseeing tours, which are available on CD or MP3, which can be downloaded by holidaymakers planning self-drive tours.

They cover the road from Alice Springs to Uluru and the Red Centre Way, which takes travellers via the West MacDonnell Ranges and Kings Canyon.

Northern Territory director Laurelle Halford said many tourists see Australia's outback highways as lonely, straight stretches of bitumen.

"Our product gives self-guided travellers a new experience by bringing to life the stories of our early pioneers, Aboriginal culture, flora, fauna and natural history," she said.

The tours also feature stories from local characters and field experts about things like life on a cattle station, how Aboriginal people read animal tracks and frogs that live in the desert

GPS firm Garmin recently launched a similar scheme, involving a satellite navigation tour for travellers off to explore the Indonesian island of Bali.

The Traveller is a leading independent travel agent that specializes in flights and holidays to Australia. Call freephone 0800 091 1513 for further details.
