Camel Cup trots into Alice Springs

Alice Springs will soon be welcoming hairy visitors of the humped variety as it prepares to hold the annual Camel Cup.

Up to 15 camels at a time line up to race around the 400-metre track, providing spectators with an unpredictable and often highly-amusing spectacle.

The Camel Cup, which this year falls on July 11th, is held at the region's Blatherskite Park and dates back to 1970 when it started as a bet between two friends.

Today the event is accompanied by food and drink stalls, entertaining belly dancers and a band between the races, which has helped it become one of the most popular events in the Alice Springs calendar.

There is even a competition for the best fancy dress outfits, the winners of which will be crowned Miss & Mr Camel Cup Challenge for the day.

Blatherskite is a major park and recreation space in Alice Springs and is where Pope John Paul II addressed the population of Central Australia in 1986.
