Aviation 'key for Queensland tourism'

Aviation will play a key role in helping the tropical north Queensland tourism industry recover during 2010, it has been claimed.

According to tourism minister Peter Lawlor, fresh aviation successes will help bolster the industry after a challenging 2009.

Speaking to tourism industry stakeholders in Cairns, he said: "Recent aviation commitments by both domestic and international carriers have been a strong indication of the industry's confidence in Queensland.

"In the year ahead, the local tourism industry can also look forward to the introduction of a new Virgin Blue Group international service between Auckland and Cairns."

He also announced a number of other routes, including 17 planned new flights per week from Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.

Last week, Mr Lawlor congratulated Queensland tourism operators which had won awards at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.

"Around 222,000 Queenslanders depend on tourism for their livelihood and I am extremely proud of Queensland's performance in the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards," he said.
