Australia holidays hit by dust storm

Travellers jetting off on Australia holidays have been faced with severe delays at Sydney Airport due to a freak dust storm that has engulfed the city.

Red dust blown over from the deserts of the Australian outback has made visibility in the city very poor, causing many flights to be diverted and interrupting ferry traffic to the harbour.

In a statement, the airport said: "Delays will impact on departures and arrivals, domestic and international services. Passengers are advised to contact individual airlines for information about their flights."

The sandstorm is so severe that it has created a haze making many of the city's most recognisable landmarks, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, invisible.

There have also been reports to the emergency services that several people have suffered breathing difficulties as a result of the dust and citizens and holidaymakers are being advised to stay indoors if they can.
