Australia cruises prove popular in Northern Territory

Cruise holidays are having a big impact on the local economy in the Northern Territory of Australia, it has been claimed.

According to tourism minister Malarndirri McCarthy, a record number of cruise ships will visit the area this season.

"The cruise ship industry is a vital part of the Territory's tourism industry with 39 cruise ships forecast to visit during 2009/10 - ten more than the previous year," said Ms McCarthy.

"These are excellent figures since the Territory Government opened Darwin's cruise ship terminal in 2008," she noted.

Ms McCarthy added that the state's government was pleased that Darwin now features on international liners' list of places to visit, as well as being popular for Australia cruises.

Earlier this month, Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor in chief at Cruise Critic, said Australia was made for cruises.

She added that "a voyage around the country is a great way to see really disparate destinations".
